Why it matters
In the cabin you sit for 30 to 45 minutes right between the heating elements. It does not get any closer. The supplier or manufacturer
Many people rely on labels such as "latest test winner" when they buy an infrared sauna. What matters far more is that you are dealing with a trustworthy brand and a reputable manufacturer.
Good personal support
Good customer care matters when you buy an infrared sauna too, for example if you have questions later on, even after the purchase. Only choose a supplier you feel genuinely well looked after by from the start.
The quality of the materials
This covers every single component of the sauna, from the timber and the heaters to the benches and the electronic controls. It helps if you can see the sauna in a showroom before you buy.
A warranty that works in your favour
When a warranty runs out after only a year, that always leaves a bitter aftertaste. The quality of the sauna should be good enough that you never need the warranty. But if a repair is needed, you should not have to pay again as a private customer because the warranty has expired. The heaters: the heart of an infrared sauna
Which heaters in an infrared sauna are actually the best? The heaters are a science in themselves, and with good reason: they make the difference between a good and a poor experience with your sauna.
Infrared is divided into:
- Near infrared
Near infrared, also called NIR or IR-A, is the most intense wavelength in the infrared spectrum. It penetrates deepest into the skin and above all stimulates sweating.
- Mid infrared
Also called MIR or IR-B. Mid infrared has a longer wavelength than near infrared and reaches soft tissue such as muscle more effectively, where it supports circulation.
- Far infrared
The infrared radiation with the longest wavelength is called FIR or IR-C. Far infrared is the most important radiation for infrared saunas, which is why most saunas rely on far infrared heaters alone.
Different manufacturers and models use different heaters, which in turn cover different parts of the wavelength range. If you want the full effect of your infrared sauna, we recommend full spectrum heaters, because they cover the whole infrared spectrum.
There are also differences in the heater materials: ceramic, carbon and magnesium heaters, and within those, spot heaters and panel heaters. Every type has its advantages and disadvantages, so there is no blanket answer for the best option. At Clearlight we use panel heaters with a unique hybrid ceramic-carbon combination.
The best timber for infrared saunas
Okoume can largely be called the best timber for infrared saunas. It is dimensionally stable and very resistant to large swings in temperature and humidity. Beyond that, Okoume has an elegant, evenly grained look and a subtle natural scent, which suits people who are sensitive to smells.
That is why our Clearlight saunas are made from FSC-certified Okoume timber; the outdoor models add weatherproof Cedartec exterior walls.
High-quality timber has its price. In our view, the quality and durability of Okoume make up for it.
Many manufacturers use spruce because it imitates the classic, light look of a sauna and is robust and long-lasting. Some saunas use odour-neutral lime wood, and outdoor saunas sometimes use very hard eucalyptus.
What a good infrared sauna costs
The cost of a new infrared sauna is a significant factor in the decision. With infrared saunas the saying "you get what you pay for" holds true, and it is no surprise that budget saunas cannot keep up with premium models in every respect.
So how much does a good infrared sauna cost? A high-quality sauna that you will be happy with for years and that meets all the requirements above starts in the mid four figures, and that is for small one and two person models.
If you want good full spectrum heaters or extras such as an ergonomic backrest or chromotherapy, expect additional cost.
